USPD: Reproduction of c.1885 photograph of Curly by David Francis Barry: b. 1854. d. 1934. Photographer of native Americans. Photograph of Custer scout 'Curly' sole survivor of the infamous battle of the little big horn 1776. Curly was not engaged in the actual battle, but observed the carnage from a nearby hill. The main participants of the battle against Custer and the 7th cavalry were Sioux tribal warriors led by sitting bull, crazy horse, and gall, among others. Curly was recruited by Custer to act as a scout since he was a Crow Indian, and enemy of the Sioux tribe He was born 1856 in Montana territory and died 1923 on the Crow reservation near the little bighorn river, Montana.
