This photo of Sam Houston an American statesman, politican, soldier, a key figure in the history of Texas. Born of Scots - Irish descent he was the first and third president of the Republic of Texas, and became Senator when Texas joined the United States. At the out-break of the civil war he refused to swear loyalty to the confederacy, and in so doing was removed from office. He was adopted as a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, and retired to Huntsville Texas where he lived, and died in 1863. A good and honest real man's man; makes todays politicians look like pikers, worse than mountain bandits.
