Description
Original on 140 lb Strathmore paper: Pen/Ink/lacquer wash. Depiction of lone covered wagon making its way through the Sierra Nevada mountains skirting Donner lake. Donner pass and Donner lake named for the ill-fated Donner party of 81 pioneers who attempted to cross these mountains, and found themselves trapped by a heavy snowfall in 1846. Thirty six of the party perished as result of starvation. and disease. The survivors resorted to cannibalism before their rescue. The mountain pass and lake are named for one of the leaders of the party; George Donner: from South Carolina.
